Fear Fashion Tribute: Larry Vaughn’s July 4th Regatta Club-Looking Blazer, JAWS (1975)

Stylistically speaking,  Larry Vaughn is a true man of the ā€˜70s. 1975 was the midway point into the polyester era; in JAWS, Mayor Vaughn shows his love for the town of Amity and off-the-rack polyester blazers and pants. His silhouette of choice is not a tailored fit, but a slightly boxy and slouchy one, and he rotates between three roomy jackets, pairing them all with a button-down shirt, tie, and trousers.

The conversation starter piece of Larry’s wardrobe is his ā€˜little anchors’ print blazer. When he argues with Brody, the town’s police chief, and oceanographer Matt Hooper –while ignoring the town’s shark problem– he is wearing this nautical-themed jacket.

More info on that jacket can be found here.

As Larry points to the billboard, his right sleeve is noticeably baggy, making him look a bit like a little kid wearing his dad’s clothes.

Since it’s the Fourth of July holiday, we shall focus on Larry’s All-American ensemble for this particular day; a festive, pastel-colored blazer that looks to be constructed from polyester/cotton twill. The blue, tan, and white striped patterned jacket has wide, notched lapels, a low gorge, loose-fitting sleeves, and sort of resembles a regatta or a rowing blazer. He’s paired it with a light salmon pink Oxford shirt, and dark blue tie and pants. Surprisingly, there’s not an American flag pin in sight! Out of all the characters that I would expect to have a patriotic symbol on his lapel –on this day– it would be the Mayor of Shark City.
