Horror Movie Mask of the Month is a monthly selection showcasing a scary horror mask

In terms of action horror entertainment, The Purge films are a damn good time. The popular 2010s dystopian film series examines a murder-is-legal-for-one-night plot that contains themes of violence, chaos, and fear of the unknown. These films allow people to live out their darkest fantasies without fear of repercussions, with many of the characters wearing masks to kill anonymously. Purge-happy characters use the annual event to murder those they hate or are envious of and to seek revenge on those who have crossed them. As “Schoolgirl #1” Kimmy and her crew demonstrate in the third episode of the series, THE PURGE: ELECTION YEAR, their masks provide them with a feeling of both autonomy and anonymity, allowing them to freely behave like lunatics.
After being kicked out of local store owner Joe Dixon’s establishment for shoplifting candy earlier in the day, ringleader Kimmy (Brittany Mirabilé) later rolls up with her homegirls, battle-ready and determined to kill him and obtain her coveted candy bar (earning her the fan nickname, “Candy Girl”). The psychotic Kimmy covers her face with a mask that is probably the most recognizable mask in the series. Dubbed the “Freakbride”, she wears a white Gothic shield-shaped face mask that would make me run in the opposite direction if I saw it approaching. Created by JDMorgan Studios, Kimmy’s creepy mask is crudely emphasized with sinewy eye sockets and a grinning black maw with razor-sharp teeth. The words “Kiss Me” are written in red across the forehead (her parents’ blood?) and the chin is spattered with blood. Upon slowly, and deliberately removing her mask, the audience is greeted with an evil face sprayed with blood, and a smile that fails to conceal Kimmy’s monstrous nature.

Though it’s only been several years since TPEY’s premiere, Kimmy’s ensemble has already become a widely recognized horror movie look that can be easily put together for Halloween cosplay; a white, blood-stained corset top, a hi-low asymmetrical pink tutu skirt, and tall black patent leather, front-lace, stack heel boots that recall the “Electra-2020” model boots from Pleaser. A rhinestone-studded AK-47 completes the outfit.
